Press Release,

Juripop and Local 712 of the Machinists Union and the Quebec Council of Machinists have joined forces for Access to Justice

Montreal May 8, 2014 – The Legal Clinic Juripop and the Machinists Union Local 712 are pleased to announce their new partnership for the 2014-2015 year. It aims to promote access to justice for its members and to raise awareness of their rights and obligations.

Juripop provides access to affordable legal services to individuals who are excluded from free legal aid provided by the government and do not have sufficient financial means to avail the services of a lawyer in private practice. “We are pleased to offer the opportunity for eligible Local 712 IAMAW members and other members affiliated with the Machinists Council of Quebec a professional and accessible legal service in dealing with various legal situations that could possibly involve members,” said Marc-Antoine Cloutier, CEO Juripop.

The union, which is affiliated with the FTQ, represents more than 15,000 members working in the aerospace industry, air transport, railway industry, metallurgy and other various industries. Eric Rancourt, Vice President of local 712 and President of the Machinists Council of Quebec, sees a unique opportunity to improve the legal knowledge of union representatives and ultimately the members it represents by providing them this valuable service. “We organize theme days for the benefit of our union representatives who work with our members to provide tools they can use in everyday life. Workers may face difficulties and may not always have the means to pay for the services of a lawyer and that is why we are excited about this new partnership, “he said.

As part of this agreement, union members, who would otherwise qualify for services at Juripop, will benefit from the services of the legal clinic and will also benefit from a free membership. Moreover, during the next year, the two organizations will work together in offering conferences towards targeted groups, namely, workers in the industry.

This partnership will contribute both to facilitate access to justice for union members and, secondly, to promote understanding of labor laws for members while helping lawyers at Juripop understand the realities of Machinists, allowing the clinic to adapt its services accordingly.
